GM confirms America will produce engine for Volt, Cruze

An existing engine plant in the U.S. will house production of an upcoming new 1.4 liter four-cylinder engine family. Slated for the use in the upcoming Volt and Cruze models, GM officials say that the new engine will begin production in Michigan at the end of next year.

The Chevrolet Cruze is scheduled for a 2010 launch as a 2011 model, and the sedan model took the stage earlier this winter at the North American International Auto Show.

Preliminary specifications on the Cruze say the 1.4 liter turbocharged engine will create 140 horsepower, and that a 1.8 liter, dual-cam four cylinder with 138 ponies will also be available.

Building the powerplant at the Flint South engine facility will require an investment of some $250 million- after which point the engine's production will be allocated to existing, available floor-space at GM's Flint South plant on Bristol Road.

GM says that the powerplants, dubbed internally as the 'Family 0' engine lineup, will be built using the automakers most flexible and competitive engine manufacturing methods. For instance, about 150 different flexible stations will allow workers to build multiple 4-cylinder engines without retooling.

Initial preparations for production of the new engine begin this spring.
